Underage lead actresses Lexi Gonzales, Hailey Mendes, and Elijah Alejo admitted that they were surprised when they received a call informing that that they would play the lead roles in the GMA Afternoon Prime series.
In an interview on the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, Lexi, Hailey, and Elijah said that they could not believe that they would be playing the roles of Celine, Carrie, and Chynna, respectively.
Lexi was already preparing to go to Korea for the taping of Running Man PH when she got the call and was asked to study the script while there.
“Parang at that time although I'm also excited and happy, overwhelmed and surprised. Hindi ko masiyadong ma-feel 'yong surprised ako. Na overwhelmed ako kasi okay kailangan work agad,” she said.
She also expressed how grateful she is for the support she received while filming Running Man PH.
Hailey, on the other hand, admitted that when her handler, Kuya Jess, called her to audition for the series, she did not know that it was for a big role. She also mentioned that she auditioned for both Chynna and Carrie, the same as Elijah.
“Pero napi-feel ko na po sa sarili ko parang walang chance, wala na talagang chance kasi ang dami po namin nag audition at kilala ko po sila magagaling po talaga sila kaya hindi na po ako nag expect,” she said.
She added that since she does not appear on TV often, she feared that she might not make the audition until she got the call from her handler that she got the role.
“Noong una hanggang ngayon po actually hindi po nagsisink in sa akin,” she said.
Meanwhile, Elijah had no clue about the impact of the 1980 movie version of Underage at the time and had to ask her mom and get to know how iconic the film was.
That's why when she heard the talks about its TV adaptation in 2020, she was already manifesting to become a part of the series. Like Hailey, she also auditioned for both the roles of Chynna and Carrie.
“Nahirapan pa sila because kaya ko 'yong dalawa. Then I got the role of Chynna so talagang una kong ginawa nun 'Thank you Lord,'” she said.
